the great debate? >>> making the grade. they advised george w. bush, al gore and sarah palin before their famous debates. with the stakes so high, what marks do our political insiders give these candidates? we'll tell you, in the "nightline" report card. >>> and, what's your percent? are you in the 47%? what does it take to be in the 1% of the 1%? this year, the percentage has taken on a life of its own, and we get right to the point. >> announcer: from the global resources of abc news, with terry moran, cynthia mcfadden and bill weir in new york city, this is a special edition of "nightline," one-on-one, the candidates debate, october 3rd, 2012. >> good evening, i'm terry moran. tonight, a high stakes showdown as president barack obama and mitt romney took the stage in denver to go head to head for the first time. an estimated 60 million americans tuned in to watch this critical moment in an often contentious presidential campaign with the election just 34 days away. crucial swing voters still undecided. with romney trailing in the polls, time running short, tonight could be his tu

is do no harm. we learned that obviously from sarah palin. most americans look at the vice presidential debate and say i'm still going to vote for romney or the president. unless there's a game changer like a sarah palin moment. that's not going to happen on thursday. i go back to my original point. these are two very smart people sticking to the talking points. at the end of the day, now what ryan does do for the ticket is he energizes the base on the republican side. also remember back in 2008 that joe biden and barack obama were not friends. this was a political marriage of convenience. joe biden was -- >> he has come to love him. >> understandably so. same thing with dick cheney and george w. bush. just psychologically it's like dick cheney was the grandfather that's been around for a couple times. back to romney. the question is, whether or not vice president biden will make a gaffe or if congressman ryan will say something that's so outlandish like the 47% that would be a game changer. that most likely won't happen. >> like the 30% he's already said? >> that doesn't -- >> it feels
. it would be for sarah palin who was so stunned she didn't even declare candidacy. he took care of newt gingrich, rick santorum, rick perry, herman cain. he made fun of them all again and again and again. but he does on on fox news, he's not just a talking head. he is the party boss saying look, i've got a billion dollars. you're not getting any of it. you're not going to run. you're not going to be the nominee. romney never took off during the primaries. it was simply everyone else was picked off one at a time. >> i arrived late, but to what extent with the republican with ross nader used to call them republic rats. and maybe for every karl rove, there is a less efficient democrat, and at his sake al gores do not really touch a nerve in the american public. so maybe the public is. >> i'm sorry, what is the question? >> it's not just a republican right wing problem, but the democrats also embed in money. they are successful. >> i mean, i entail the same? is that roughly which are getting a? i do think there's fundamental differences than i would use the u.s. attorney scandal just to giv
. >> in 2008 with the introduction of sarah palin was the first time the vice presidential debate was ever the highest 01:39:43:rate ed debate. we have this again. >> governor romney, last night, people say he mangled the truth to put it gently. the obama campaign -- they did a smart thing today. got up bright and early this morning realizing they took a loss last night and began pointing out where governor romney had not said what he said before, had not stuck to the truth. however, we learned again last night, if we needed reminding, that there's power in taking the view. listen, i'm frequently in error, but never in doubt. i believe what i'm telling you. and that carries its own power and strength. >> especially when you're talking to 50 million or 60 million people at a time. that is a perfect segue to everything we're doing in the rest of the hour on this show. dan rather, always such an honor to have you. >> thank you, rachel. enjoy to be on. >> "dan rather reports" is on axs tv. okay. we'll be right back. save up to 35% and get 3 years interest-free financing on tempur-pedic. but hu
'll call you jennifer. you were the stand-in for sarah palin when joe biden was prepping in 2008. we were all wondering what's going on behind the scenes. how important is it this prepping for debate now? >> oh, it's huge. i mean, can you look at books and study policy papers all you want. there is no substitute for standing behind a podium and having everything but the kitchen sink thrown at you and formulate phrases to communicate. there's no substitute, and no one loves to do it. no one wants to do it, although i must say joe biden was very game in 2008 to do it. >> tell us what it looks like. who is actually in the room? this is a pretty secretive process zoosh yeah, i mean, i don't know what they're doing this year, but i can tell you in 2008 they have the policy people there. you remember that biden and obama were just sort of marrying as a team, and so we had some obama people and some biden people in the room. the folks who know the issues extremely well. the room itself is set up -- the stage exactly like the debate will be, so when you do the mock debates, you're really in chara
a news nerd, people under 50 have no idea who that is. someday that will be sarah palin. >> you think? >> yeah, she'll be a screechy loud mouth from the right. i like how marginalized phyllis schlafley has gotten. >> they rolled out women for akin. they had an odd video. >> it looks like one of those dove commercials. real women they had a sampling of women there just cheering on an absent todd akin. >> it's odd. i reported first that the video which apparently didn't mean to go live, they took it down right after i reported on it, it was the first woman breaking in video had a woman hiding in the shadows talking about todd akin. she couldn't show her face. she had no idea and she was saying i got raped and he didn't judge me at all. >> no one ever accused him of judging rape victims. >> right. >> no one ever said you were mean to rape victims. >> he did say legitimate rape. >> that to me, i if people had a moral center, they'd be holding paul ryan's feet to the fire or his comments on rape. >> not only his comments, but legislation. he tried to redefine rape in the house, he backed a
? it sort of negates any positive effect. >> sure. it wasn't just the debates four years ago, but sarah palin's performance overall probably really did have a negative impact on john mccain. i mean, that's pretty clear. so yeah, sure, it's not without risk or without meaning. and then there's already been some evidence in polling that paul ryan has hurt mitt romney a little bit because of his association with the medicare voucher program that he's proposed. and they've even had to back away from that. that can't help in pennsylvania, either, which i believe is the third oldest state after florida and west virginia. >> all right. well, that certainly makes sense. philadelphia enquirer's thomas fitzgerald. thanks so much. good to talk with you. >> thanks, alex. >>> representative michele bachmann lost the gop primary but this week she picked up a major endorsement from -- speaking in a radio interview afterwards she laid out the focus of her campaign. >> this is the number one issue this year is the economy, job creation, how we can add more jobs and higher-paying jobs. i worked extremely
romney -- i understand what you're saying politically, but i think it's like sarah palin and biden, she got through and everybody said she did well. >> don't you think it's up to romney to tell -- >> i just want to say that clearly tonight, both candidates are the underdogs. who knows, there's room for both. but there is a difference between a zinger, which is what small campaigns think of their own candidate when they think he's small, but you want to demonstrate strength, and saying this is howly lead the country, those are the moments i paid for this microphone, and it can change the debate. >> mitt romney is closing the gap, it's getting closer in major swing states. stay tuned for that. you've been busy for a dead man. after you jumped ship in bangkok, i thought i'd lost you. >>> surfing is my life now. but who's going to .... >>> tell the world that priceline has even faster, easier ways to save you money. . . on hotels, flights & cars? you still have it. >>> i'll always have it. so this is it? >>> we'll see where the waves take me. sayonara, brah!
